CORONA X NORTH – PLASTIC NOT FANTASTIC

Matt PikeComment

Eight million metric tonnes of plastic goes into the ocean each year. That’s about 250kg a second, or 16 shopping bags full for every metre of coastline. Pretty depressing for an ocean-loving crowd like us. In this day and age, you’d have to be living under a rock to not to be aware of this problem, but sometimes it takes these kinds of harsh statistics to reignite the need for real action and change. Given Australians’ love for the ocean and our predominately coastal way of life, we have some fantastic local initiatives and organisations that have been cleaning, educating and fighting the good fight against plastic pollution on our shores for many years.

Corona’s passion for beach, surf and ocean culture has led the brand to partner up with Parley for the Oceans, an organisation and collaborative network that raises awareness for the beauty and fragility of the oceans by uniting creators, thinkers and leaders in projects that make an impact at a global level. By implementing the Parley AIR strategy (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign) Corona pledges to protect 100 islands around the world by 2020. The project will transform communities worldwide by implementing educational programs and sustainable infrastructure, removing plastic from beaches and making sure they stay that way forever.

By making a simple pledge to remove one type of plastic from your daily life, you can help take that first step and build the momentum within a larger global movement. We’ve designed four pledges on the following pages that will help get the ball rolling, so we would love you to pick the one that resonates with you most, write your name on it and get someone to take a photo of you holding it up. Then share the photo to Instagram with @north_journal @coronaextra_au and #100islandsprotected. The best 10 photos will receive a Corona X Parley reusable drink bottle in a custom North canvas tote. Be the change you want to see in the world today.
